The Ura Yakchoe is a vibrant summer festival held in the serene valley of Ura in Bumthang, central Bhutan. "Yakchoe" literally means "yak offering"—a nod to its ancient roots, likely stemming from pre-Buddhist, animistic traditions. Even today, remnants of these origins remain, as local priests perform age-old Bon rituals to invoke the cattle deity, symbolizing Bhutan’s deep connection with nature and livestock.
The festival opens with a scenic procession from Gaden, the seat of Ura’s local lama, to the Ura village. As the entourage moves through lush meadows and sparkling brooks, visitors are treated to Bhutan’s breathtaking landscapes. Once in Ura, the five-day celebration unfolds with exorcism rituals, sacred mask dances, folk performances, and spiritual offerings—each reflecting Bhutan’s devotion to preserving its rich heritage amid growing modernity.
This tour offers more than just the festival. You'll explore the heart of Bhutan, visiting sacred temples, experiencing the warm hospitality of local communities, and taking in the stunning natural beauty of central Bhutan.
