National Memorial Chorten

Located in the heart of Thimphu, the National Memorial Chorten is one of Bhutan’s most revered religious landmarks. Built in 1974 in honor of King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, the "Father of Modern Bhutan," the chorten serves as a place of daily worship for Bhutanese devotees. Unlike traditional chortens, which typically house relics, this stupa was built as a symbol of world peace and compassion rather than a tomb. It embodies the vision of the late king, who wished for a monument to inspire the people of Bhutan in their spiritual practice.

The chorten features a striking golden spire, whitewashed walls, and intricate mandala paintings, reflecting Bhutanese Buddhist art and architecture. Surrounding it, a continuous stream of elderly devotees and monks can be seen circumambulating the chorten, spinning prayer wheels and chanting mantras. It is a vibrant spiritual hub where people gather to meditate, pray, and seek blessings, making it a vital part of Bhutanese religious life.
